2022 Volvo XC60

There’s no shortage of compact luxury crossovers. But for an option with Swedish flair, there’s only one choice: the Volvo XC60. First introduced for the 2009 model year, the XC60 brought Volvo’s unique automaking approach and dedication to passenger safety to a practically sized and feature-filled utility vehicle. Along the way, this five-seater has become one of the brand’s best sellers.

Volvo XC60: A Smarter SUV

The XC60’s updates for 2022 include redesigned bumpers, new wheel options, some interior revisions, and a new Google-based infotainment system to complement the Scandinavian interior. Plus, a hands-free tailgate is now standard on all trim levels. While there’s also a plug-in hybrid version, the 2022 XC60 Recharge, we cover just the standard gasoline-only 2022 Volvo XC60 on this page.

Trims and Powertrains

Volvo sells the XC60 in three trims: Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription. The base powerplant is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, called the B5 engine, which makes 247 horsepower and 258 lb.-ft. of torque. The available upgrade, the B6 engine, adds a supercharger for an output of 295 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. Both powerplants work with an eight-speed automatic transmission and a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that harvests kinetic energy created during the stopping process (regenerative braking) and provides low-end torque and smoother shifting.

The B5 engine with front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard across the lineup, with all-wheel drive (AWD) available. The R-Design and Momentum can be upgraded with the B6 powerplant and standard AWD. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for B5-equipped XC60s is 23 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the highway; this changes to 22 city / 28 highway when AWD is added. The rating for the B6 is 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the open road. The 2022 XC60 can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Features and Options

Buyers of premium European cars expect even base versions to be well-equipped, and the XC60 Momentum holds to this quite well. Its standard features include a panoramic sunroof, dual-zone touchscreen automatic climate control, elegant City Weave upholstery, adaptive LED headlights with cornering illumination, matte black roof rails, and 18-inch alloy wheels. There are also rear parking sensors, a driver’s position memory system, a tailored steering wheel, heated front seats (AWD only), wireless device charging, heated power-folding exterior mirrors, and a digital instrument cluster. And since this is a Volvo, there’s a bevy of standard driver safety technology; look for the details in the next section. The Momentum can be upgraded with the available leather upholstery or the Climate Package (heated front seats [FWD only], a heated steering wheel, and a headlight washer).

The R-Design brings a sporty look and feel to the XC60 with black exterior accents, including gloss-black roof rails and 19-inch double-spoked alloy wheels in matte black. It also adds sport pedals, remote entry, heated contour front sport seats with power lumbar support and power cushion extenders, front passenger seat position memory, a tailored sport-style steering wheel, a leather-wrapped shifter handle, a tailored dash, power-folding rear-seat head restraints (outboard), a HomeLink universal garage door opener, quad-zone touchscreen automatic climate control, a sophisticated cabin air filtration system, front parking sensors, and seats upholstered in a blend of Nappa leather, leatherette, and fabric. Its options include the Climate Package (with a choice of integrated rear-seat child boosters or heated rear outboard seats) and a four-corner air suspension.

The top-of-the-line Inscription lets buyers choose between wool-blend upholstery or perforated Nappa leather-trimmed seating. It also gets ventilated front seats with power-adjustable side support, the equipment from the Climate Package, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, quad-zone automatic climate control, front parking sensors, 19-inch wheels, bright-aluminum roof rails, a crystal gearshift knob, and chrome exterior accents. The four-corner air suspension is available. All XC60s can be upgraded with the optional Polestar Performance software for improved engine and transmission responsiveness.

Every 2022 XC60 has forward collision mitigation with pedestrian and cyclist detection, the Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with steer assist, rear cross-traffic alert with rear automatic braking, lane departure warning, oncoming lane mitigation, road sign assist, and lane-keeping aid. All trims can be equipped with the optional Advanced Package, featuring the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driver support system with adaptive cruise control, a surround-view monitor, and a head-up display.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Among the XC60’s most innovative features is the infotainment system; it’s one of the first vehicles with Google-based functions. Access to Google Maps, Google Assistant, and Google Play is controlled via the touchscreen or voice command. A 9-inch touchscreen is the nerve center of the system, and its features include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, Volvo On-Call remote services, and a Wi-Fi hotspot. There are also dual USB-C ports in each row. The Momentum gets a 10-speaker audio system, which can be upgraded to the 14-speaker Harman Kardon arrangement that comes standard on the R-Design and Inscription. Those two higher trims are eligible for an upgrade to a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 15 speakers.
