2023 Volvo C40 Recharge

Among all the sleek crossovers and sedans at a Volvo dealership is a car like no other: the C40 Recharge, Volvo's first pure electric vehicle. This distinctive five-passenger crossover, now in its second model year, is built on a platform embedded with advanced technology.

Powerful and Fast-Changing

Volvo's dual electric motor system propels the C40 with gusto, and the battery charges rapidly (see the next section for details). Plus, the automaker's Pilot Assist technology, which is standard on the highest-priced trim level, provides a semi-autonomous driving experience. Adding to the welcoming and modern interior is a standard glass roof. On the practical side, the C40 provides up to 49 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats down.

Trims and Powertrain

Volvo offers the all-wheel-drive C40 Recharge in three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. All have an electric dual-motor system that makes 402 horsepower and 486 lb.-ft. of torque. It's a potent powertrain that relies on a shift-by-wire single-speed transmission and propels the C40 to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds. The vehicle has a 2,000-pound maximum towing capacity.

The EPA-estimated range is 226 miles with a full charge; its MPGe rating is 94 in city driving and 80 on the highway. Volvo reports that charging the C40 from 10% to 80% takes under 40 minutes using a Level 3 DC fast charger.

Standard Features

Volvo outfits the entry C40 Core with a wide array of equipment for maximum comfort and convenience. These features include a fixed-panel dark-tint panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control with electric heating and cooling, proximity keyless entry, a power tailgate, and Charcoal Fusion Microtech Vinyl upholstery. The Core also comes with a 12-inch instrument panel, power-retractable side mirrors, rear privacy glass, cruise control, a driver's memory system, multi-position power front seats with heat, rear parking sensors, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Plus trim adds a surround-view monitor, fog lights, front and rear parking sensors, power-folding rear head restraints, expanded front passenger-seat controls, and a foldable cargo floor with a divider. This version's cabin is trimmed in Charcoal Connect Suede Textile and Microtech Vinyl. Both the Core and the Plus can be equipped with the Climate Package for heated rear outboard seats, headlamp cleaners, a heated steering wheel, and a heat pump to maximize battery life.

Completing the C40 Recharge range is the loaded Ultimate. As the name implies, it's the most fully equipped version and the only one to receive the aforementioned Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving features. It also has adaptive cruise control, upgraded audio equipment (which is covered below), 20-inch alloy wheels, and all of the components of the Climate Package.

Advanced Safety Technology

No conversation about a Volvo is complete without discussing its safety technology. The C40 Recharge has been recognized by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety for its standard safety features, earning it the organization's designation as a Top Safety Pick Plus vehicle. It comes with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, a lane-keeping aid, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign information.

Infotainment and Connectivity

The C40's advanced technology includes a state-of-the-art infotainment system with a 9-inch touch-activated display (it also responds to voice commands). The system comes loaded with Google apps, including Google Maps and Google Assistant, as well as an eight-speaker High Performance audio system, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to the Volvo Cars smartphone app. A 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system is a standard upgrade on the Ultimate trim.
