XC40

As Volvo’s most affordable model, the XC40 is integral to the Swedish automaker’s U.S. lineup. Even as an entry-level nameplate, this subcompact crossover has core Volvo characteristics: striking Scandinavian styling, advanced safety features, and an ergonomically designed interior crafted with high-quality materials. For 2026, Volvo has packed even more value into the XC40, introducing a lower-cost front-wheel-drive version with an updated engine. In addition, all trims now have adaptive cruise control and parking sensors. Aside from that, the XC40 has an available 247-hp turbocharged engine that allows it to reach 60 mph from a standstill in a zippy 6.1 seconds.

Trims and Powertrains

Volvo sells multiple versions of the 2026 XC40: Core, Plus, Ultra, and Ultra Black Edition. All of them have a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine enhanced with a mild-hybrid system. The front-wheel-drive (FWD) Core and Plus have the B4 version of the powerplant that makes 194 horsepower. The more powerful B5 powerplant, which produces 247 horsepower, is optional on the lower trims and standard with the Ultra and Ultra Black Edition; an all-wheel drivetrain (AWD) comes standard with this upgrade. The XC40 has up to 57.5 cubic feet of cargo space and can tow up to 3,500 pounds with the proper equipment. The EPA-estimated combined fuel economy for the B4 engine with FWD is 27 mpg, while the B5 powerplant with AWD is rated to achieve 26 mpg.
