This premium compact crossover is one of the industry’s most sensible options, offering up to 57.5 cubic
feet of cargo space and plenty of leading-edge amenities that guarantee an exceptional driving
experience. The XC40 is even equipped with a mild hybrid powertrain that delivers outstanding fuel
economy without compromising on power.
For the 2024 model year, Volvo introduces a range of updates. While maintaining the same overall
appearance from the outgoing model, this latest XC40 now offers two new paint colors: Cloud Blue and
Vapour Grey Metallic. Each trim can also now be enhanced with the Bright Exterior theme, which adds
gleaming trim accents for a more polished appearance, while the Plus and Ultimate offer the bolder Dark
Exterior theme.
Not only that, but each trim has had its equipment list expanded with new standard features. The
entry-level Core debuts wireless phone charging and keyless entry, while the mid-tier Plus adds 19-inch
wheels, an air purifier, and a surround-view camera. At the top of the range, the Ultimate gains 20-inch
wheels, distinctive pixelated headlights, cornering lights, and power child-safety locks.
Trims, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy
The 2024 Volvo XC40 is offered in three trims: Core, Plus, and Ultimate. The entire trio gets the brand’s B5 mild hybrid powertrain, featuring a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (248 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque) joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain. The XC40’s maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds, and according to the EPA’s estimations, it achieves 24 miles per gallon in city driving and 30 mpg on the highway.
Standard Equipment
The base Core has numerous high-level amenities, such as a hands-free liftgate, keyless entry, LED
headlights, rain-sensing wipers, power-folding side mirrors, roof rails, dual-zone automatic climate
control, interior mood lighting, a tailored sport steering wheel, and a sculpted shift knob. The front
row seats are heated, and the power-adjustable driver’s seat features position memory for convenience
when more than one person drives it. On the tech front, this trim includes a 12-inch digital gauge
cluster, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and a wireless phone charge pad. The Core can also be ordered
with a panoramic glass roof for added luxury.
The Plus adds the panoramic roof along with proximity keyless entry, an air purifier, expanded interior
mood lighting, leather upholstery, a crystal shift knob by Orrefors, wood interior décor, fog lights, a
12V cargo area power outlet, a HomeLink universal garage door opener, power-folding rear head
restraints, and front seats with manual cushion extenders and passenger’s-side power adjustability. It
also comes with a convenient storage bin beneath the front console. At the top of the range, the
Ultimate shows off pixelated LED headlights (which are available for the Plus) and implements a few
infotainment and safety upgrades, which are detailed in the sections that follow. All trims can be
ordered with a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, and a tow hitch.
Advanced Safety Equipment
The ’24 XC40 receives a generous stable of advanced driver-aid technologies. All trims have blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, lane keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign assist. The Plus and Ultimate add a surround-view monitor and front and side parking sensors, while only the Ultimate receives adaptive cruise control.
Infotainment
Volvo has moved to a convenient Google-based infotainment system featuring Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store. It also has smartphone integration (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone and audio streaming, and SiriusXM satellite radio, all of which are controlled via a 9-inch touchscreen. While the Core and Plus come with an 8-speaker audio system, the Ultimate boasts a more advanced 13-speaker Harman Kardon unit with an air-ventilated subwoofer (this is an optional upgrade for the Plus trim).
