2024 Volvo XC40 Recharge

Volvo has enhanced the inner workings of the all-electric XC40 Recharge for 2024. The latest edition of this efficient compact crossover features increased range thanks to new powertrain options, including a rear-wheel drive variant and an updated all-wheel-drive (AWD) version. These enhancements, along with new aerodynamic wheel designs, allow the 2024 Volvo XC40 to provide full-charge range of up to 293 miles.

The 2024 XC40 Recharge also brings the return of a rear-wheel-drive (RWD) Volvo for the first time in 25 years. That said, the automaker strategically positioned this EV’s battery pack and motor for optimal traction from a RWD setup. This engineering also enables a more efficient Twin Motor AWD platform featuring a drivetrain that only activates the front wheels when they’re needed, resulting in greater efficiency and improved range.

Trims and Powertrains

Volvo offers the five-seat 2024 XC40 Recharge in trim levels called Core, Plus, and Ultimate. The Single Motor (RWD) drivetrain is the starting point, with a 248-horsepower electric motor and 82 kWh battery pack spinning the rear axle. All trims are available with the Twin Motor configuration, which raises the rear-motor output to 255 horsepower and adds a 147-horsepower motor up front. This system uses a 78-kWh battery pack.

In RWD form, the XC40 Recharge has an EPA-estimated range of 293 miles and an MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) rating of 118 in the city and 95 on the highway. The Twin Motor version is rated for a 254-mile maximum range (a 31-mile improvement from last year) and 106 MPGe in the city and 90 MPGe on the highway. Using Level 3/DC fast charging, it takes about 30 minutes to get the XC40 Recharge’s state of charge from 10% to 80%.

Standard Features and Options

The XC40 Recharge Core may be the base trim, but it shows off a long list of comfort and convenience features. The highlights are proximity keyless entry, heated front seats with manual cushion extensions and power lumbar controls, dual-zone climate control, a power driver's seat with memory, a power tailgate, Microtech upholstery, a 12-inch digital instrument panel, power-folding side mirrors, rear privacy glass, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and 19-inch alloy wheels. Volvo upgrades the Plus trim with fog lights, a panoramic moonroof, upholstery in a mix of Microtech and synthetic suede, power-folding rear head restraints, a foldable cargo floor with a divider, and a cargo area power outlet. The Core and Plus can be equipped with the optional Climate Package for a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, headlight washers, and a heat pump (to warm the cabin without sacrificing range). The Ultimate’s standard features include everything from the Climate Package plus 20-inch alloy wheels.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Volvo outfits the 2024 XC40 Recharge with a comprehensive suite of advanced driver-assist technologies, including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, cruise control, road sign recognition, and rear parking sensors. A surround-view monitor and four-side parking assist are standard on the Plus and Ultimate. The Ultimate also gets adaptive cruise control and the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system. All trims have anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, hill descent control, a set of airbags, hill start assist, and a rearview monitor.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Infotainment for the XC40 Recharge is routed through a 9-inch touchscreen that’s supported by Google Built-In features (including Google Maps and Google Assistant), Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, SiriusXM satellite radio, and access to the Volvo Cars smartphone app. The Core and Plus are equipped with an eight-speaker audio system; the Ultimate upgrades to a 13-speaker Harman Kardon arrangement.
