2026 Volvo
XC90 Plug-In Hybrid

Volvo’s three-row plug-in hybrid meets 2026 wearing the sharper face introduced late in the previous year’s production cycle. This refresh features a tidier lower intake framed by a sculpted hood, a reworked bumper and fenders, slimmer “Thor’s Hammer” headlamps, and a restyled grille. At the same time, the interior is organized around a larger and more prominent infotainment touchscreen, while advanced noise tuning keeps the cabin quieter. Comfort has increased as well, since every trim now includes a heated steering wheel and heated second-row outboard seats.

The T8 plug-in hybrid system is the flagship powerplant of the XC90 lineup. With 32 miles of all-electric range, this three-row crossover is ideal for errands and commuting. Of course, with up to 530 miles of total range between the electric range and a full gas tank, it’s equally well-suited for road trips and longer journeys. This overview covers the 2025 XC90 Plug-In Hybrid; the regular XC90, a mild-hybrid, is detailed separately.

Trims and Powertrain

The XC90 Plug-In Hybrid comes as the Core, Plus, and Ultra trims, with each built around the T8 setup. This powertrain consists of a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with plug-in gas-electric hardware that results in a combined 455 horsepower; an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain complete the mechanical scene.

An 18.8-kWh battery supports an EPA-estimated 32 miles of electric driving, with roughly 5 hours needed for a full charge using a 240-volt Level 2 connection. EPA-estimated combined fuel economy is 27 mpg. The XC90 Plug-In Hybrid can tow up to 5,000 pounds (when it’s sufficiently equipped) and provides up to 85.7 cubic feet of cargo space behind the first row.

Standard and Available Equipment

The seven-passenger Core anchors the lineup with a nice mix of amenities highlighted by leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, heated power front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated second-row outboard seats, driver’s-side memory, and quad-zone climate control with dedicated third-row air conditioning. The standard amenities continue with proximity keyless entry, a 12-inch driver information display, heated power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, rear privacy glass, wood cabin accents, ambient interior lighting, USB ports, wireless device charging, and 20-inch wheels.

The Plus adds an integrated child booster seat, 21-inch wheels, and an available six-person cabin configuration with second-row captain’s chairs. Ultra aptly describes the top-level trim, which has perforated Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power lumbar and adjustable side bolsters, a head-up display, driver’s-seat power cushion extension, front passenger seat memory, and rear-door sunshades. To make it even more luxurious, the Ultra is eligible for six-passenger seating (second-row captain’s chairs) and the Lounge Package, which adds a Nubuck headline and massaging front seats.

Volvo Safety

Volvo lives up to its longstanding reputation for safety by including extensive advanced driver aids on every trim. The standard technologies in the ’26 XC90 PHEV consist of forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, oncoming-lane mitigation, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, Pilot Assist (hands-on lane centering with adaptive cruise control), front and rear parking sensors, road-sign information, and slippery-road alert. The Plus and Ultra also get a surround-view monitor and perimeter parking sensors. The underlying safety equipment for all trims includes a complement of airbags, traction control, stability control, hill descent control, anti-lock brakes, hill start assist, and a rearview monitor.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Center stage within the XC90 PHEV’s dash is an 11.2-inch portrait-oriented infotainment touchscreen running Google built-in, so that navigation and other functions operate through Google Maps and Google Assistant. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Bluetooth, and SiriusXM are also included, with remote function available through the Volvo Cars app. The Core and the Plus have a 10-speaker audio system, while the Ultra upgrades to a 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup (which is optional for the Plus).
