2023 Volvo S60

For buyers looking to boost their daily drive, the 2023 Volvo S60 is more than worthy of consideration. This refined Scandinavian four-door is understated in the best way possible with its minimalist design, dignified amenities, and engaging yet smooth performance. While it continues to go head-to-head with other segment stalwarts, the improvements on the 2023 iteration give it some extra fighting power.

Engaging yet smooth.

In addition to a revised trim lineup (Core, Plus, and Ultimate), the 2023 S60 gets a facelifted appearance, improved interior materials, and a new Google-based infotainment system that's more polished and user-friendly than the setup it replaces.

Trims, Powertrain, and Fuel Economy

Buyers interested in the 2023 Volvo S60 can pick from the three aforementioned levels: Core, Plus, or Ultimate. Volvo’s B5 powertrain appears in each of them, marrying a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (247 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque) to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive will be the more popular option on this winter-ready car. The S60 is remarkably efficient, too, returning an EPA-estimated 26 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway with FWD and 25 city/33 highway with AWD.

Standard Amenities of Note

If there's one thing that really makes the 2023 S60 stand out, it's Volvo's commitment to providing the highest quality experience imaginable. Every trim, starting with the entry-level Core, is treated to a slate of premium equipment such as which fog lights, rain-sensing wipers, a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, interior mood lighting, and dual-zone automatic climate control. Its front seats are power-adjustable, too, and the steering wheel and shift knob are both luxuriously tailored. This base trim even gets a 12-inch digital instrument panel and an auto-dimming rearview mirror, but its centerpiece is a 9-inch touchscreen that harbors the Google-based infotainment system. Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play Store are installed, along with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker audio system.

The Plus is enhanced with expanded interior mood lighting, leather upholstery, and one-touch folding rear seats with electronically folding outer rear head restraints. The Ultimate places a greater emphasis on luxury with four-zone automatic climate control, a head-up display, a specially tailored dashboard, a cushion extender for the driver's seat, and position memory for the front passenger's seat. On top of all that, the Ultimate is outfitted with a premium 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system that includes an air-ventilated subwoofer.

Advanced Safety Equipment

You'll have extra peace of mind in the S60, given its lineup of standard driving aids (and Volvo's ongoing commitment to safety in general). The Core comes with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, lane keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation, and road sign assist. The Plus and Ultimate are elevated with Pilot Assist adaptive cruise control, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view camera, and extra parking sensors on the front and side of the vehicle.

Packages and Individual Add-Ons

Two signature packages are available to make the S60 even more interesting. There's the Climate Package (headlamp cleaners and heating for the front seats and steering wheel), as well as The Protection Premier Package (a first aid kit, wheel locks, rubber floor mats, and a plastic luggage mat). The Plus is also eligible for the lavish Harman Kardon audio system that's standard in the Ultimate, while the Ultimate can be ordered with a top-tier 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system. Not only that, but there are three available themes for the 2023 S60: Dark, Bright, and Black Edition. The Dark theme supplies glossy black exterior detailing, whereas the Light theme has bright chrome accents. Meanwhile, the Black Edition comes with expanded gloss-black exterior elements for an overall more mysterious aesthetic. Both the Dark and Black Edition themes are optional for each of the three trims, but only the Ultimate qualifies for the Light theme.
