Trims, Powertrain, and Performance

The 2023 Volvo XC90 is an all-wheel drive, three-row crossover that’s available as the Core, Plus, and Ultimate. Two powerplants are offered to pair with the eight-speed automatic transmission: the B5 and B6. The B5 is a turbocharged mild-hybrid four-cylinder that produces 247 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque, whereas the B6 is a supercharged mild-hybrid four-cylinder making 295 hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The EPA’s official fuel economy estimates state that the B5s achieve an estimated 22 mpg around town and 28 mpg on the highway, while the B6s return 20 city/26 highway. Both powertrains are able to tow as much as 5,000 pounds.

High-End Features

The ‘23 XC90 places a premium on luxury, as demonstrated by the high-end features in the base-level Core trim. It gets a panoramic sunroof, keyless entry, fog lights, roof rails, synthetic-leather upholstery, a tailored steering wheel and gear selector, aluminum interior accents, heated and power-adjustable front seats, position memory for the driver’s seat, power-folding outer rear head restraints, a hidden cargo-area storage compartment, rain-sensing wipers, interior mood lighting, a 12-volt power outlet, an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink, and a Google-based infotainment system with Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker sound system.

The Plus adds a heated steering wheel, integrated headlight cleaners, expanded interior mood lighting, wood interior trim, leather upholstery, and heated rear seats. The Ultimate comes with rear sunshades, a head-up display, ventilated Nappa-leather upholstery, gray wood interior trim, an elegant gear selector by Orrefors, a powered cushion extender for the driver’s seat, position memory for the front passenger’s seat, and a top-shelf 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system with an air-ventilated subwoofer.

Advanced Safety Systems

Safety has long been Volvo’s hallmark, and as such, several advanced driving aids are standard in the ‘23 XC90. The Core gets adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, lane keeping assist, road sign recognition, and oncoming lane mitigation. Meanwhile, the Plus and Ultimate are elevated with a surround-view camera system and side parking sensors.

The 2023 Volvo XC90 can be bolstered with a few signature upgrade packages. Two are offered for the Core: Climate and Protection Premier. The Climate Package will issue a heated steering wheel and heated rear seats, along with convenient headlight washers. The Protection Premier Package bundles a plastic luggage mat, rubberized floor mats, a first aid kit, a stainless-steel bumper cover, and wheel locks. A 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system is available as a separate option. Since the Plus already has the contents of the Climate Package, it’s only eligible for the Protection Premier Package and Harman Kardon sound system. The Ultimate is entitled to the Protection Premier Package, too, as well as the Lounge Package (a suede-like headliner and massaging front seats). For a more deluxe listening experience, Volvo offers a 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system.
