2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country

While crossovers and SUVs dominate automotive sales, not every car buyer wants a bulky utility vehicle. That said, enhanced traction and extra space are appealing to most drivers. Recognizing these contrasts, Volvo has long made station wagons an integral part of its lineup. Among them is the V90 Cross Country, but this is no ordinary wagon. The midsized V90 has the fine exterior of a premium European vehicle along with Volvo’s signature Scandinavian-design interior. The formula also includes raised ground clearance, a supercharged and turbocharged engine, and standard all-wheel drive. All of this adds to a car that drives like a sport sedan and offers the practicality of a crossover. The 2024 Volvo V90 Cross Country is the latest iteration of this boundary-breaking wagon.

Trims and Powertrain

Buyers can choose from two versions of the all-wheel-drive 2024 V90 Cross Country: Plus and Ultimate. Both have a 295-horsepower 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that cleverly combines the advantages of supercharging and turbocharging. The powertrain is managed by an eight-speed automatic transmission, further enhanced by a mild-hybrid system to maximize efficiency. The EPA-estimated fuel economy for the V90 Cross Country is 22 mpg in city driving and 29 mpg on the highway. When it is properly equipped, this stalwart wagon can tow up to 3,500 pounds.

Standard Features

The Plus trim serves as the entry point for Volvo’s flagship wagon. It’s nicely equipped with leather upholstery, a panoramic moonroof with a sunshade, a power tailgate, four zones of automatic climate control, power-adjustable front seats with heat and lumbar controls, and a driver’s position memory system. This well-appointed base trim also has proximity keyless entry, fog lights, a 12-inch instrument panel, rear privacy glass, roof rails, windshield wipers with integrated washers, power-retractable side mirrors, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

The Ultimate trim takes the V90 Cross Country further upscale with Nappa leather upholstery, a head-up display, a tailored dashboard and door-top panels, rear-door sunshades, an Orrefors crystal shift knob, and 20-inch wheels. There are also considerable upgrades for the front seats, including ventilation, massage function, additional power lumbar control, power side bolsters, a power cushion extension for the driver, and position memory for the front passenger’s seat.

Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology

Safety is synonymous with Volvo, and so the V90 Cross Country gets a suite of the latest driver-assist technologies. These features include forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, lane-keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation (gentle steering returns the car to the correct lane position), rear collision warning (to alert approaching vehicles to potential collision and apply the brakes to minimize any impact), Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view monitor. Volvo also adds front and rear parking sensors, a road sign information display, and slippery road alert. Both trims also have a rearview monitor, an array of airbags, anti-lock brakes, stability control, traction control, hill descent control, and hill start assist.

Infotainment and Connectivity

Volvo’s advanced technology extends into the cabin with a 9-inch, portrait-style infotainment touchscreen. The system benefits from Google built-in features (like Google Maps and Google Assistant), Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth. A ten-speaker sound system is standard in the Plus trim, while the Ultimate gets a 14-speaker Harman Kardon upgrade. Both trims include a four-year subscription to the Volvo Cars app for connected services like emergency notification, vehicle monitor, and remote features.
