Trims, Powertrains, and Fuel Economy

The 2024 Volvo XC90 is a midsized three-row crossover that’s available with two powertrains: B5 and B6. They’re essentially the same turbocharged 2.0-liter mild-hybrid four-cylinder engine with an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drivetrain, but with different tuning. The B5 makes 250 hp and 258 lb.-ft. of torque and can tow up to 4,000 pounds, while the B6 puts out 316 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque and has a towing limit of 5,000 lb. Core and Plus trims are offered with both the B5 and B6 powertrains, but the top-tier Ultimate is only made with the B6.

While the default seating arrangement accommodates seven passengers, the B6 Plus and Ultimate offer elective second-row captain’s chairs that will reduce seating to six. The ’24 XC90 is notably fuel efficient, too, returning an EPA-estimated 22 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway with the B5 powertrain and 20 city/26 highway with the B6.
