While electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, they’re not always the best pick for everyone,
especially for buyers seeking a capable and spacious three-row crossover. Recognizing this shortfall,
Volvo stepped in with the 2024 XC90 Recharge, a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) that bridges the gap between
all-electric driving and conventional gas-powered transportation. With up to 32 miles of battery-only
range, the XC90 Recharge is ideal for local errands and relatively brief commutes (especially for those
who can plug in at work). And once the battery power is exhausted and the fuel tank kicks in, its
conventional gas-electric hybrid system makes range anxiety a non-issue.
But the XC90 Recharge
isn’t just about efficiency; Volvo has made it a performance machine in disguise. Its zero-to-60 mph
time of 5.0 seconds makes the XC90 Recharge one of the quickest crossovers on the road. Furthermore, the
automaker packs this model with sought-after standard features, such as leather-trimmed seating, a
panoramic sunroof, and quad-zone automatic climate control.
Trims and Powertrain
Volvo offers the 2024 XC90 Recharge plug-in hybrid (PHEV) in trim packages called Core, Plus, and
Ultimate. The standard T8 powerplant features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine combined
with PHEV technology. The system produces 455 horsepower, which is distributed to all four wheels via an
eight-speed automatic transmission. The model’s EPA-estimated fuel economy is 27 mpg combined in
gas-burning mode and 58 MPGe (miles per gallon equivalent) when just the battery is providing the power.
The XC90 Recharge has an all-electric range of 32 miles via an 18.8-kWh battery, which can be
recharged in about five hours when using a 240-volt home charger. With all seats unoccupied and folded
flat, the XC90 Recharge has a potential cargo capacity of 85.7 cubic feet. When it’s properly equipped,
it can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
Standard Features
Despite being the base trim, the XC90 Core is well equipped with leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof,
four zones of automatic climate control (with dedicated third-row air conditioning), heated front seats
with power controls, a driver's position memory system, a power tailgate, and proximity keyless entry.
This entry-level edition also gets a 12-inch instrument panel, power-retractable side mirrors,
auto-dimming rearview mirrors, rear privacy glass, cabin accents in walnut, ambient interior lighting,
USB ports, and 20-inch alloy wheels. The Plus trim is enhanced with a heated steering wheel, heated
second-row seats, an integrated child seat booster, upgraded cabin lighting, and headlight
cleaners.
Completing the XC90 Recharge’s trim trio is the Ultimate, which is loaded with
perforated Nappa leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats with power lumbar and side
bolster controls, a head-up display, a driver's seat power cushion extension, a front passenger-seat
memory system, rear door sunshades, an Orrefors crystal shift knob, tailored dashboard and door top
panels, and 21-inch alloy wheels. The Plus and Ultimate can be equipped with optional second-row
captain’s chairs, which will reduce the seating capacity to six.
Advanced Driver Aids and Safety Technology
The XC90 Recharge’s comprehensive list of advanced driver-assist features includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, oncoming lane mitigation (to control unintended movement into an oncoming lane), blind-spot monitoring, cross-traffic alert, Pilot Assist (hands-on semi-autonomous driver support), adaptive cruise control, front and rear parking sensors, road sign information, and slippery road alert. The Plus and Ultimate get a surround-view monitor and perimeter parking sensors (front, rear, and sides). Also standard are a complete airbag system, anti-lock brakes, traction control, stability control, hill descent control, hill start assist, and a rearview monitor.
Infotainment and Connectivity
All XC90 Recharge have a 9-inch portrait-style touchscreen infotainment setup. The system has Google built-in services (such as Google Assistant and Google Maps), Apple CarPlay, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth. The Volvo Cars smartphone app provides access to remote services and other features. The Core and the Plus have a 10-speaker audio system, while the Ultimate gets a 14-speaker Harman Kardon audio system (this is optional for the Plus).
